Playback Music School: A Place to Learn, Grow, and Rediscover Your Voice

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in nearly two decades of teaching, it’s this:
Music changes people.
Sometimes slowly, sometimes all at once, but always in a way that stays with you.
Playback Music School was built because of my students.
Their stories, their courage, their frustrations, their breakthroughs. These are the things that shaped this school long before the walls existed.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or someone picking up music again after many years,
Playback is a place where you can grow at your own pace, make friends, and rediscover a part of yourself you might’ve forgotten.

Why Playback Exists — And What Makes It Different
A Tight-Knit Community (That Somehow Stays For Years!)
One thing I’m proud of is how long my students stay. Many of them join thinking they’ll learn for a few months…and somehow, three or four years later, they’re still here, joking, singing, performing, and supporting each other.
Playback aims to be a real community, not a transactional “come for 10 lessons and leave” school.
Students hang out, rehearse together, celebrate each other’s wins, and push one another to be better.
For some, it becomes a second home.
A True Safe Space — Judgement-Free… Except From Me!
Music can be vulnerable. Cracking notes, going off-pitch, trembling during your first performance — I’ve seen it all.
Playback is built to be a safe, judgement-free space where you can try, fail, try again, and slowly realise you’re capable of far more than you thought.
(Except you’ll still get judged by me — in a good way! Tough love is part of my job.)
Experienced Instructors Who Actually Care
I teach with a mix of encouragement, humour, and occasionally tough love. My goal is to go above and beyond for every student because I’ve gone through professional training myself and I know where most syllabuses fall short.
I demonstrate techniques, break things down practically, and help students apply what they learn immediately into real songs.
And our other instructors share the same philosophy: teach well, care deeply, and grow together with students.
Performance Opportunities — Because Growth Lives on Stage
We have mini-showcases, full concerts, recording sessions, and more.
Some students step on stage trembling…but step off feeling like a completely different person.
Performances aren’t just events —they’re milestones of growth.

Student Heartwarming Stories
Playback isn’t built on marketing talk — it’s built on real people.
Siauhui — From Zero Confidence to Commanding a Stage
When Siauhui first joined, she could barely sing in front of a small group.
Her voice would tremble.
Her hands would freeze.
Sometimes she would laugh nervously just to avoid singing her lines.
But she kept going.
Years of training, encouragement, and a lot of laughter later…
she now performs confidently in front of hundreds of people, year after year.
Watching her step on stage with a smile and actually enjoy it. Still gives me goosebumps every time. Shhhh.. don't tell her that. Later her head will grow too big for her shoulders.
Rene — From “Odd Singing” to Recording Artist
Then there’s Rene.
When she first walked into class, she had perfect pitch…
but her presentation? She could hold a tune no problem, but it wasn't very pleasing.
But here’s what mattered:
She showed up every week.
She put in the work.
She trusted the process.
Fast forward to today,
she’s recording her own covers and original songs, and boy, does she sound amazing.
And here’s the funny part:
Rene and Siauhui became close friends, and Rene often ropes Siauhui into singing her demos… then proceeds to give very specific opinions on how she should sing them, almost like what I’ve always told Siauhui. I must admit, it was amusing (and a little satisfying) to hear that.
These aren’t exceptions,
they are the heart and soul of Playback.
Real people growing together, cheering for each other, and becoming better versions of themselves through music.
